Q. I am 30 weeks pregnant. What exactly do I mean when I tell people I am so hormonal? A. I am not sure what you mean when you say “I am hormonal”. Here is a list of some hormones and what they do. Use them however you would like to justify your “hormonal” attitude:Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) supports the placenta in the first ten weeks of pregnancy. It is also believed that this hormone causes the early fatigue, nausea, and vomiting that occurs in the early stages of pregnancy.Progesterone is one of the major hormones of pregnancy and is primarily produced by the placenta. It basically softens the uterus so it can expand for the growing fetus, which results in increased heartburn and acid reflux, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. It also causes cartilage to soften, which causes pain in the hip and pelvic bones and is what causes the early stages of breast tenderness and general bloating.Pregnancy increases the HCG, Progesterone, and Estrogen, with this surge of hormones comes a surge of emotions. Tears of joy can turn to tears about your changing body. All of the emotions should be easily managed by the support of loved ones. If it seems excessive, you should tell your health provider immediately! After pregnancy hormone rapidly decrease. Any unmanageable bouts of depression should be discussed with you doctor.
