Oily Skin: How To Care For Skin In Colder Weather

By: Kim
September 01, 2009

Colder weather is here, this doesn’t mean it is time to get lazy with your skin care regimen. With the weather temperature slowly dropping, you need to be prepared on how to defend your skin. The sun was the major battle of the summer, but now for the winter you will be pumping up the heat. The change in the weather will definitely have an affect on your skin. Here are some dos and don’ts for the colder seasons:

• Leave the deep cleaning products for the summertime. The harsher you are to your skin, the more your body will over produce oil as a defense mechanism.

• Stay away from soaps! It will strip you of your natural oils. Use a cleanser that is designed to remove excess oil and still leave a strong protection of fatty acids to help protect your skin. Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash is soap-free, oil-free and lathers away dirt, make-up, and oil without over drying the skin. Just because your cleanser is gentle do not over-wash your face, only twice a day!

• Use a toner that will reduce the appearance of pores. Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner helps maintain the natural balance of the skin. You may have to repeat this application twice a day to see results when dealing with oily skin. Masques can also help pull oil from the pores. Estheticians find that using a clay or mud masque once a week can help absorb the oil and leave the skin looking shine-free for hours. Check out Dermalogica’s Skin Refining Masque for oily skin. It is a skin-clarifying masque with oil-absorbing Kaolin and Bentonite clays. These clays absorb excess oils while the botanical extracts reduce inflammation and revive dull skin.

• Don’t forget to scrub! Exfoliation will help in reducing the sebum that is building up in the pores and in return will give you a more youthful glow instead of a shiny one. This procedure will also help balance out the skin’s pH level. Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Scrub is a daily cleansing scrub with Beta Hydroxy. It will clean deep down into your pores and still be gentle enough to use every day.

• Everyone should moisturize no matter what your skin type, there is a difference between oil and moisture. Even oily skin can become rough and irritated during the fall weather. Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer SPF 15 is a perfect to wear during the day. At bedtime, try Clinique Continuous Rescue Antioxidant Moisturizer. It has a delayed release of antioxidants that keep the skin strong and prevent visible signs of aging. I love a moisturizer that is hard at work while I’m getting my beauty sleep.

Now that you have the proper weapons, it's time to get out there and fight the bitter cold.
