As the winter months blow in, so does the cold weather. When the temperature outside is cold enough to freeze water, imagine what it can do to your skin. Here are a few tips to help keep your skin moisturized and protected against super cold weather.
1) Modify your shower. You will want to take a shorter shower with cooler water. I know we all prefer a long, hot shower in the winter. But shower water contains chlorine. When showering under hot water, your pores open up allowing a high rate of absorption of chlorine and chemicals. This is not skin friendly! It will cause dryness, itching, flaking, and premature aging.
If modifying your shower is too painful to consider, attach a filter to your showerhead. The filter will reduce chlorine in the water, allowing you to enjoy those hot showers without skin and hair damage.
2) Wash with a moisturizing gel instead of a harsh soap. Read the labels and look for something that contains moisturizers.
3) Apply moisturizer right after a bath or shower. As soon as you step out of the shower, quickly dry off and immediately start moisturizing.
4) Switch to a thicker cream during these cold months. Make certain that your moisturizers are cream-based versus gel-based, which can cause you to peel. Oil-based products work well too and I know women that swear by baby oil!
5) Moisturize your face, neck, and hands 30 minutes before going outdoors. This will help protect the skin and avoid unpleasant feelings like windburn.
6) Keep moisturizing throughout the day. After being outdoors for a long period of time, it helps to do a quick cleanse and moisturize your face again.
7) Avoid putting on makeup. If you know you are going to be home for the day and don't need to put on makeup, then don't. (Jacob will forgive you!) It's better to let your skin breathe and absorb moisturizers as much as possible. By doing this you build up a barrier for your skin to naturally fight back.
These winter months can be hard on the skin. Take the proper precautions before you decide to step outside. Just a few simple changes in your skin care routine can help make a big difference. Trust me, your body will thank you.
