Step By Step: Self-Tanner

By: Karen Cecilia
June 28, 2009

You have a self-tanner in hand. Now what? Here are tips on how to prep your skin, apply the self-tanner, and make it last.

1. Prepare your skin

The key is to exfoliate and keep your skin free of oils or lotions that will create a barrier. If you need to shave, wax, or depilate, do this first. If you have a body exfoliating gel like Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Body Buffing Beads, that is also a great way to start. Avoid any oil-based exfoliators.

2. Application

It is best to put on a pair of gloves if you have them. But if not, keep some soap handy and wash your hands during application so color doesn't build up.

Apply self-tanner one body part at a time. A good place to start is the legs. It's like applying lotion. Really rub it around well. The self tanner has a tint to it, to help you see exactly where you are applying it. This tint gives you instant gratification but will wash off after the next shower.

After you have covered all the body parts you can reach, have someone help you with your back, or use a spray to apply.

Now you have to let the self-tanning action do its job. Do not shower or work up a sweat for 6-8 hours. You don't want it to streak. I put it on before going to bed so this won't be an issue. If it gets on your clothes, sheets or towels, don't worry it washes right out of almost every type of fabric (with the exception of silk).

3. Make It Last

You have prepped, tanned and now you are happy with your color. How can you make it last? One word... moisturize. Also avoid really hot showers. Swimming in a pool or ocean can wear some of the color off, but it won't completely disappear.

4. Treat Mishaps

Did you have a mishap with the application or don't like the color? Do all the opposite things that keep it on. Take a long hot shower, exfoliate, and shave.

What are the best self-tanners? At myBBF.com we like Clarins Intense Bronze Self-Tanning Tint. Now go and enjoy the summer and remember your sunscreen.
