I spent several weeks in July in France, the first three days in Paris, and then a couple of weeks in Arles in the south of France. I was in Arles for a photo festival, so it was a pretty international crowd (I could tell the New Yorkers by their black clothing, even in 90 degree dry weather). Whenever I travel I like to study the local makeup practices, it always inspires me, and this trip was no exception. What struck me was the simplicity and elegance of the Provencal makeup. The most common look I saw was a bare face, no eye makeup or even mascara, but with a carefully chosen lip color perfectly applied. Usually this was a summery red, but on the bluish side: cerise, magenta, even reds bordering on fuchsia. To me this looked simple and effortless yet elegant and classy. The French have always impressed me with their makeup and fashion skills. Just a little observation I thought I'd pass on.
