One Generation

By: Scott
August 10, 2009

August marks the 35th anniversary of the first black model on the cover of American Vogue. The model was Beverly Johnson. I mention this partly because we lost one of the first great black models earlier this week; Naomi Sims lost her struggle with breast cancer on August 1st.
Now there is an interesting story as to how Beverly Johnson got to be on that cover. Allegedly it was thanks to Lauren Hutton, who (rumor has it) told Grace Mirabella (then editor in chief at Vogue) that she had a model friend who was struggling, and she wanted Grace to put her on the cover of Vogue, any month, or she (Lauren Hutton) would never work for Vogue again. Interesting story, I don't know if it's true or not, but it is entertaining.
Anyway, 35 years, one generation later we have a black president. That's progress!
