Body Type Dos and Don’ts – Inverted Triangle Figure

By: Peggy
August 01, 2008

Congratulations! You’ve determined your figure type is inverted triangle, which means you have large shoulders and/or bust, narrow hips and shapely long legs. You’re in excellent company by the way. Catherine Zeta Jones, Cameron Diaz, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellwigger and Pamela Anderson are also inverted triangles. To be in the company of that bunch has got to make you feel good! Are you getting the picture here? Cleavage and legs! Yes! Those are your best features. Other women envy you and men admire you. You’ve got it going on sexy girl. Now let’s talk clothes.

Since your cleavage and legs are your best features you want to highlight both. At the same time, your challenge is to minimize your upper half, specifically your chest and shoulders. You’re wondering why you’d want to play down your chest. Well, first, it’s not about making your chest look smaller. It’s about creating visual balance between your upper and lower halves. And second, you don’t want to appear heavier than you really are. Wear darker or neutral colors on top and lighter colors on bottom. Avoid busy prints and embellishments on top as well. When you wear a print, opt for simple or vertical patterns because they will make you appear slimmer.

Because you are larger on top, finding the perfect dress may sometimes be difficult. You should consider separates because they may help you achieve a better fit. Create the look of a dress with a sexy top and pencil skirt instead. The good news has to do with being smaller on the bottom. Ready? You ROCK pants. You do! You can wear just about any style pant or jean. You look great in a variety of skirts, too.

That said here are my tips on looks and styles that work best for you, as well as what to avoid.

PANTS - You can do it all. Narrow, wide, fluid, short or long. You can wear any cut, style, details or trimmings. Choose a color lighter than your top even if it’s monochromatic or only slightly lighter.

JEANS - As with pants, you can wear any style. However, consider a lighter wash or pair with some bleaching or whiskering on the leg. This will draw the eye to your lower half. By the way, you’re going to look better in your bootcut jeans then everyone else!

SKIRTS - Full skirts are your best bet as they balance your upper half. Try straight, flared, a-line, trumped, pleated, circle, wrap or tiered. Any length is fine but knee length looks best on you. As with your pants, go for a lighter color than your top or perhaps a print. You can wear details and embellishments on your skirts so go for it. A really great look for you is a blousy top tucked into a flared skirt. Avoid pencil skirts because they will make you appear bustier.

DRESSES - Lose, unstructured styles and dropped waists work best for you. The shirt dress with a loosely tied sash is classic for your figure type. You can also wear a sheath as long as the skirt is an a-line. Other styles to try are the tunic and coat dress. Avoid tightly fitted bodices, embellishments or prints on top and yoke, boat neck, large lapel or gathered sleeve styles.

TOPS - Try loose, unstructured styles that have deep armholes such as a kimono, raglan or other dropped sleeve top. Tailored u-neck and v-neck shirts will slim your torso. Wear these with boot cut pants and jeans. Wraps or any top with a slightly nipped waist are a nice choice and look great with flared skirts. Avoid embellishments, anything with padding at the shoulders, large lapels or collars, boat necks, gathered sleeves, halters and strapless tops.

JACKETS/SUITS - You can wear jackets at any length as long as they are fitted at the waist. One button jackets and wide leg trousers are a great suit look for you. Your jackets should be single breasted, slightly fitted, plane and have small lapels. Never wear a double breasted style. Most jackets have padding at the shoulders. Make sure yours have minimal to none.

You’ve got a fabulous, sexy figure. Keep harmony in mind as you combine pieces to form outfits that visually create balance between your upper and lower halves. And, we’ll help you. Your beauty essentials recommendations are customized for your shape so be sure to check them on a regular basis.

Feel confident and look beautiful!

Go for volume on your lower half - a line skirts, wide leg trousers, etc. Also, look for embellishments on your back pockets - Hudson Jeans has some great styles. And - Victoria's Secret makes a booty enhancing jean called the VS Uplift - they work. Go to www.victoriasecret.com! Good luck and you go girl!
